An isolation plan that accounts for every source.
An isolation is only as safe as its list. Every energy source on the system, every boundary valve, every blind and lock point, identified before the crew walks out. An Intuigent drafts that boundary and that list from the plant as built, cited to every sheet the trace crossed.
Why isolation planning is hard to get complete
The dangerous part of an isolation plan is not writing it. It is knowing when it is finished.
- Energy hides in more than one form. Pressure is the obvious source. Electrical feeds, gravity drain-back from elevated inventory, chemical reaction and residual product, and stored energy each have to be found separately, and each fails differently when missed.
- Boundaries cross sheets. A system worth isolating rarely lives on one drawing. The trace runs through off-page connectors across P&IDs, and every connector is a chance to lose a line. Done by hand, it consumes a senior engineer's day and demands their full attention for all of it.
- The list has no natural end. Utility ties, shared relief headers, drains, vents, and instrument connections all cross the boundary somewhere. Nothing tells the planner the enumeration is complete. The plan gets declared done, not proven done.
Missed sources on multi-sheet systems are how people get hurt. The lockout/tagout rule, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, assumes the plan behind the permit is complete. Getting to complete is the whole problem.
The workflow
The boundary and the list, drafted from the graph.

Trace the boundary
Follows every line into and out of the system across sheets, through off-page connectors, until the boundary closes. The multi-sheet trace that consumes a day takes the graph seconds.
Enumerate the energy sources
Pressure, electrical, gravity drain-back, chemical, stored energy. Each source is identified per line and per equipment item, not assumed from the service.
Sweep the interfaces
Utility ties, shared relief headers, drains and vents, instrument and sample connections. The lines that do not look like process lines are the ones that get missed.
List the isolation points
Every valve, blind location, and lock point on the boundary, each cited to its sheet and connector. Where positive isolation calls for a blind rather than a closed valve, the list says so.
Assemble the draft plan
The marked boundary, the point list, and the citations, packaged for the field walk-down. What the crew verifies is a complete draft, not a blank page.
